What is Neoprene Foam?

One of the best foams for insulation, Neoprene is a closed cell, durable, sponge like rubber.  It’s thermal and moisture insulation qualities make it ideal for an insulator when combined with its form fitting characteristics.  This flexible foam is commonly used for athletic padding, sealers and gaskets.

What is Cross-Linked Polyethylene Foam?

Cross-linked Polyethylene foam is a water resistant, closed cell foam that has a smooth feel. Its ability to be thermoformed or compression molded allow it to be an ideal material for a wide variety of products.  Cross-linked polyethylene is resilient, extremely buoyant and is great for shock absorption.  Common uses of cross-linked polyethylene include medical device packaging, padding, and insulators with a need for water resistance.

What is Polyethylene Foam?

Polyethylene foam, unlike reticulated polyurethane, is a close cell material. This very lightweight, cost effective foam is extremely durable and shock absorbent.  Ideal for packaging, polyethylene foam is resilient, strong, and can dampen the effects of vibration.  Polyethylene foam also encompasses insulation properties and has a high resistance to chemicals and moisture.  Buoyancy is another feature of polyethylene foam that makes it ideal for floatation equipment.

What is Reticulated Polyurethane Foam?

Reticulated Polyurethane Foam

A widely used and popular foam is the reticulated polyurethane. Reticulated foams are open cell and have a wide range of porosity.  From 10 pores per inch to 100 pores per inch, this light weight foam is popular for filtration and is commonly referred to as “filter foam”.   Polyurethane foam is thermally reticulated which eliminates the traditional cell membranes and produces a flexible skeletal structure.  Because of its strength, durability, and ability to resist most chemicals, its usage is broad across several markets including medical devices, automobile components, aircraft filters, and even sound absorption.

The two main types of reticulated polyurethane foams are polyester foam and polyether foam.   Polyester foam is often more rigid, shock absorbent, and durable than polyether foam.  These qualities make polyester ideal for secure packaging during transportation or storage as well as sponges and mops for cleaning.  Polyether foams are more affordable, flexible, and perform better in wet environments.  Having slightly larger cells than polyester foam, polyether allows air and moisture to flow easily through its cell structure.   Therefore, Polyether foam is largely used for a variety of filters including air, sound, and liquid.
